Details

The PHOENIX BJJ shorts carry the flame treatment onto the mat: a rising phoenix down one leg over a fire-textured hem, red wing feathers and the AUN wordmark on the other, and an orange shield at the thigh. The design is dyed into the fabric rather than printed on top, so it will not crack, peel or fade.

What makes these grappling shorts?

What is missing matters as much as what is there. No pockets, no zips and no belt loops, because anything a finger or toe can hook is a hazard in a scramble and most academies will turn it away. A side slit on the outer thigh lets the knee travel for guard retention, and a wide elastic waistband holds at the hip without a rigid closure pressing into your back on the ground.

  • No pockets, zips or belt loops, so nothing catches a finger or toe.

  • Side leg slit for guard work and full hip range.

  • Wide elastic waistband, comfortable flat on your back.

  • Fully sublimated phoenix artwork that will not crack or fade.

Made for grapplers who want to be easy to spot on a busy mat, and for anyone whose shorts drawer is already four pairs of plain black. Red reads well on video, which matters if you film your rolls.

Complete the set

They match the PHOENIX BJJ rashguard, or the long sleeve, and layer over the PHOENIX BJJ spats. Explore more jiu jitsu shorts and no-gi gear.

Can I get them in academy colours?

Yes. Send your academy colours and logo and we rebuild the design around them, with artwork returned for sign-off before production. The minimum order is 10 pairs and sizes can be mixed across the run.

How do I care for them?

Machine wash cold inside out with like colours and hang dry. Do not iron the print, bleach, or tumble dry on high.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a good pair of BJJ shorts?
No pockets, no zips, no belt loops, and enough stretch to let the knee come to the chest. Anything a finger or toe can hook is a hazard on the mat and most academies will turn it away. Beyond that you want a waistband that holds without a rigid closure pressing into your back on the ground.
Can I wear board shorts or gym shorts for BJJ?
Not ideally. Board shorts have stiff panels and often a lace or velcro closure that digs in under guard, and gym shorts usually have pockets that catch fingers and toes. Grappling shorts remove both problems, which is why most academies ask for them.
Do you wear spats under BJJ shorts?
Many people do, and it is the standard no-gi look. Spats add leg coverage against mat burn and the shorts go over the top. Shorts alone are fine too, so wear whichever your academy is comfortable with.
Are these shorts legal for IBJJF no-gi competition?
Check before you compete. IBJJF sets its own requirements on shorts for no-gi divisions, covering things like length, closures and logos, and those are revised between rule book versions. Treat these as training shorts and confirm against the current IBJJF rule book for your division.
Will the print survive daily training?
Yes. Sublimation dyes the graphics into the polyester rather than laying a print on the surface, so there is nothing to crack or lift when the fabric stretches or gets gripped. The colours hold through repeated washing.
